2-Phenoxyethanol CAS 122-99-6 C8H10O2
Phenoxyethanol is a traditional preservative. It is a colorless, slightly viscous oily liquid with a slight aromatic odor and a pungent taste. It is slightly soluble in water and basically insoluble in mineral oil. It can be mixed freely with acetone, ethanol and glycerol. Phenoxyethanol has a very significant killing effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and it can inhibit both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism is that it acts on the cell membrane to increase the passage rate of potassium ions and reduce the activity of enzymes, thereby inhibiting cell growth and achieving an antibacterial effect. When only phenoxyethanol is used as a preservative, the preservative effect is not good at low concentrations, and it may cause skin burning and stinging at high concentrations. Therefore, it needs to be used in combination with other preservative ingredients.
