Piglets – the primary target animal for calcium formate
Among all livestock, piglets are the animals with the most urgent need for feed acidifiers and the most significant effects.
Post-weaning period – “acid vacuum period”
During lactation, the lactose in the sow’s milk is fermented by lactic acid bacteria in the stomach to produce lactic acid, maintaining an acidic environment (pH 34) sufficient to kill E. coli and Salmonella that enter the stomach with feed and feces. However, after weaning—when sow’s milk stops—the supply of lactic acid is interrupted—and the piglet’s own gastric acid secretion mechanism is not yet fully mature (the ability of gastric parietal cells to secrete HCl takes several weeks to fully develop)—the stomach pH rises sharply from 34 to 5-6.
Application of Calcium Formate in Other Animals
Egg-laying hens and broiler chickens
Laying hens: Calcium formate provides calcium—an eggshell contains about 2 g of calcium, almost all of which comes from feed. The high calcium content and good absorption of calcium formate—helps maintain eggshell thickness during peak laying—reducing egg breakage rates;
Broiler chickens: Acidifying the gut inhibits Clostridium perfringens (the pathogen of necrotizing enteritis), reducing intestinal lesions. Simultaneously, calcium supplementation supports rapid bone development during growth, reducing the incidence of tibial dysplasia (TD—one of the most common leg diseases in broilers).
Ruminants (cattle and sheep)
The rumen of ruminants is a massive fermentation tank—maintaining a stable pH is crucial for rumen health. Calcium formate in concentrate supplements plays a role in preventing rumen acidosis—high-concentrate diets (containing large amounts of corn and wheat) rapidly ferment and produce acid in the rumen—causing the pH to drop sharply below 5.0—leading to rumen acidosis and excessive proliferation of lactic acid bacteria. Trace amounts of calcium formate buffer the rumen pH.
Pet food – premium dog and cat food
In premium complete dog and cat foods, calcium formate serves as both a calcium source and a mild preservative, slowing the growth of microorganisms in the feed after storage and opening—making it more “natural” than purely chemical preservatives (such as potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate)—and is favored by formulators in the clean label trend.
Aquatic products (fish and shrimp)
In fish and crustacean feeds—calcium formate provides absorbable calcium—shrimp and crabs need a rapid calcium replenishment after molting to harden their new shells. Calcium formate is more water-soluble than calcium carbonate (calcium carbonate is almost insoluble—unsuitable as the sole calcium source in aquaculture feeds)—and is used in shrimp feed.
Summary
Calcium Formate (Feed Grade Calcium Formate / CAS 544-17-2) occupies a precise niche in the feed additive spectrum—it doesn’t offer the strongest acidification (that’s the domain of phosphoric acid and pure formic acid), nor does it offer the highest calcium content (that’s the domain of calcium carbonate). However, it simultaneously provides “moderate acidification” and “medium-high calcium content”—solving two seemingly unrelated nutritional problems with the same white powder during the vulnerable weeks after weaning when piglets have insufficient stomach acid and their bones urgently need calcium for rapid growth.
| Scene | The “Dual Effect” of Calcium Formate |
| Weaned piglets | Slow release of formic acid in the stomach inhibits E. coli, reducing diarrhea. Intestinal absorption of Ca²⁺ leads to rapid bone mineralization, preventing lameness. |
| Laying hens | Formic acid protects the gut from being attacked by Clostridium perfringens. Calcium sustains you with one eggshell a day. |
| Shrimp and crab molting | Dissolves in water to release Ca²⁺ – the new shell hardens within hours – protecting it from attack by its own kind. |
| Feed storage | HCOO⁻ inhibits the proliferation of Salmonella in feed bags—protecting the pigs even before they reach their snouts. |
In the era of non-antibiotic growth promoters in feed additives—acidifiers, enzymes, probiotics, and plant extracts are the four pillars. Among these, calcium formate is one of the simplest, cheapest, and most “dual-function” basic options. It doesn’t pursue the strongest—it pursues “just enough acidity, just enough calcium.”
